for Haiti Travel

Vaccinations that are currently recommended by the

Kent County Health Department

Hepatitis A and A2

Tetanus

Typhoid

Hepatitis B1, 2, & 3

MMR

Malaria pills (through your doctor, health department will advise which pill)

Hepatitis A is good for 6 to 12 months.  If you do not intend to travel to countries such as Haiti in the future then this would be the only Hepatitis you will need.  Should you decide to get the Hepatitis A2 then you will be protected for twenty years.  Hepatitis A2 is a follow-up shot six months after the Hepatitis A shot.  Because the Hepatitis A alone is good for only 6 to 12 months it is recommended to get 4 to 6 weeks prior to departure.

Tetanus is recommended to have if you have not had tetanus shot in the past 7 to 10 years.  Because of the conditions in Haiti they recommend you have a current tetanus shot if past 7 years.

Typhoid is recommended and there are now two ways you can receive.  If you get a Typhoid shot it will be good for two years and if you take a series of Typhoid pills it will be good for five years.

Hepatitis B1, B2, is necessary for travel to Haiti.  Hepatitis 1 & 2 are given within one month of each other and should be started a minimum of 4 weeks prior to travel.

Hepatitis B3 is a follow-up shot that is given a minimum of five months after the

Hepatitis B2 shot and will last you a lifetime.

MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)  The health department is now recommending for those born in 1957 or later without a history of measles or without a history of two doses of MMR, or aren’t sure if you had two doses they recommend getting the second dose.

When should you contact the Health Department?

Minimum of eight weeks prior to travel to arrange an appointment or now if time is short!   They will then schedule an appointment so you can receive both the Hepatitis B shots prior to departure.  At your first appointment they will give you all the other shots listed above if you have not already received.  Each shot is $35 to $55.

It is now up to you!

Call the Kent County Health Department to schedule an appointment and to verify all the information above to be certain you receive all the necessary updates and vaccinations.
